Four Generations of Western Oregon University Alumni: A Legacy of Tradition and Pride

LTR: Darian M. Noll with grandparents Karin and Ronald T. Noll

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Western Oregon University alumnus Galen B. Nielsen ‘66, embarked on a journey of education and service that would span four generations at Western.

In 1965, Nielsen and his wife, Louise, moved to Monmouth, Ore. with their four daughters where he completed his degree in mathematics at Western. He then went on to receive his master’s degree at Oregon State University while teaching at Western and then became the head of the math department at Linn-Benton Community College. In 1973, Nielsen joined the Saudi Arabian Coast Guard and lived and worked in Saudi Arabia with his family for the next 15 years before he retired.

Nielsen’s two eldest daughters, Carole and Karin, attended Western in 1972. In 1974, Karin joined her parents in Saudi Arabia for a few months and met her husband Ron. They returned to Monmouth in 1977 for her to complete a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, then moved back to work in Saudi Arabia. In 1983, they returned to Monmouth once again, this time for Karin to earn her master’s degree in education.

In 2003, Karin’s daughter Katherine attended Western and graduated with a degree in earth science. She then moved to China and taught biology for 14 years.

The fourth generation of the family, Katherine’s son Darian, began his educational journey at Western in 2020. “My first day of school was actually in 2003 when my mother dropped me off at daycare on campus as she had a full schedule of classes to attend. Sixteen years later I was able to be a student and play baseball this time. I felt at home being on Western’s campus and I miss it every day,” shared Darian. He adds that it was important for him to attend Western because three prior generations of his family received their education and started their families at Western. “This university has helped shape me and my family into the people we are today. Thank you Western for the hospitality. Go Wolves!”

Powell holds a doctorate in Research, Evaluation, Measurement, and Statistics from the University of Georgia and is a Southern Regional Educational Scholar. With training and experience in survey and instrument development, program evaluation, and statistical analysis, she brings a wealth of knowledge to her position.

“Powell brings a wealth of experience to this role, with a proven track record in data-driven decision-making and a deep understanding of our university’s mission,” says Provost Jose Coll. “Her leadership in institutional research is exactly what is needed to drive Western forward.” Coll also thanks Michael Baltzley, Ph.D., for his leadership in serving as the Director of Institutional Research. He appreciates the expertise and commitment Baltzley brought to this role for the past several years.”

WOU-Chemeketa Partnership for Master’s Degree

Written by Maureen Brakke

MONMOUTH, Ore.Western Oregon University and Chemeketa Community College recently established a streamlined path for students enrolled in Chemeketa’s Bachelor of Applied Science program to further their education and career prospects through access to additional academic resources and graduate coursework at Western.

Starting August 1, 2024, students enrolled in Chemeketa’s Bachelor of Applied Science program with a GPA of 3.25 or higher will be eligible to apply for non-degree undergraduate status at Western. Once admitted, these students will have the unique opportunity to enroll in up to 15 credits of graduate coursework toward Western’s Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership program during their final year as undergraduates.

One of the key advantages of this partnership is the ability for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Science program to apply graduate credits towards the requirements of both their bachelor’s degrees and reserve them for the commencement of their master’s degree studies. This integrated approach maximizes the efficiency of their academic journey and ensures a seamless transition into graduate-level studies.

“This partnership exemplifies our commitment to promoting student success and facilitating academic excellence,” said Amber Deets, director of Graduate Studies. “By providing students with enhanced opportunities for growth and development, we empower them to become future leaders in their respective fields.”

“This work is the result of extensive collaborative efforts between faculty members from both Western Oregon University and Chemeketa Community College. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Chemeketa for their invaluable collaboration and support in bringing this initiative to fruition,” said Western’s Provost Jose Coll. “Together, we eagerly anticipate the positive impact this partnership will have on nurturing the academic aspirations of our students and fostering a vibrant community of lifelong learners.”

“This valuable collaboration gives our students an opportunity for a seamless pathway from a Career and Technical Education degree to a master’s degree,” said Chemeketa Community College’s Chief Workforce Innovation and Community Success Officer Holly Nelson.
