MONMOUTH, Ore.—Western Oregon University is excited to announce its annual Giving Day, Howl from the Heart, taking place on March 4, 2025. This day of crowdfunding invites everyone to contribute financially to the projects and initiatives that matter most to them.

Since its launch in 2016, Giving Day has successfully raised nearly $1.4 million for various programs. Contributions have funded scholarships, supported athletic endeavors, and provided essential resources for student clubs and organizations, among other impactful uses.

This year, the Western community will have the opportunity to support over 60 projects spanning departments, scholarships, athletic programs, and campus organizations. Every gift, regardless of size, contributes significantly to enhancing the educational experiences of students.

“Giving Day is a wonderful opportunity for alumni, friends, and supporters to discover the incredible initiatives underway at our university and to choose which ones they wish to support,” said Dave Beasley Ph.D., director of annual giving. “Every contribution, no matter its size, is valued and makes a difference in the lives of our students. I truly cherish Giving Day as it empowers us all to contribute to the vision we have for Western’s future!”

Donations can be made online on March 4, by calling the Foundation at 503-838-8814, or by delivering gifts in person at The Cottage on campus. All Giving Day gifts count towards Wolves Rising: The Campaign for Western Oregon University’s $20M comprehensive campaign.

For the second year, Western is introducing a service component for students, who will engage in community service projects both on and off campus in the weeks leading up to Giving Day, and on March 4. Projects include a campus blood drive, a park cleanup in Salem, and working with local seniors. Western will also host a service fair on campus on March 4, connecting students with local community service organizations in need of volunteers.

Join Western Oregon University on March 4, 2025, for Howl from the Heart. Make a meaningful contribution and help ensure that every student at Western has the resources they need to thrive.

MONMOUTH, Ore.The Research Institute at Western Oregon University announced that it has been awarded the Rural Early Learning Facility Improvement Grant from the Ford Family Foundation to continue its vital work in enhancing capital improvements for childcare providers across Douglas, Klamath, Lake, Coos, and Curry counties. This grant marks a significant continuation of efforts that began in 2021.

The Ford Family Foundation first awarded a grant of $257,500, which was active from December 1, 2021, to November 30, 2023. A second grant of $500,000 was awarded for the period from December 1, 2023, to November 30, 2024, followed by a third grant of $275,000 for December 1, 2024, to December 31, 2025. To date, 40 programs have benefited from this funding.

This grant addresses a critical funding gap for early learning and care programs, particularly in rural areas of Oregon. While funding exists for basic health and safety equipment required by licensing, significant gaps remain for capital improvements. Many early learning and care programs operate as small businesses without the financial means to afford necessary upgrades before opening or expanding.

The grant provides essential financial support for new childcare businesses seeking licensing, existing providers looking to expand, or programs that need to make capital improvements. Individual grants range from $5,000 to $25,000, depending on project needs and program qualifications.

“We are seeing a steady increase in applications from providers who want to maintain their capacity and improve their facilities,” said Betsy Paniagua Chavez, bilingual project coordinator. “Last year, we supported a program that had been in operation for 11 years but faced closure due to a bathroom water leak. Thanks to this funding, we were able to finance their bathroom remodel, allowing them to keep their doors open.”

The grant enables funding for various improvements, including:

Indoors:

  • Heating, cooling, and ventilation issues
  • Remediation of lead paint and pipes
  • Installation of child-sized plumbing and handwashing stations
  • Flooring and painting
  • Water leak mitigation
  • Fixed equipment such as washers and stoves

Outdoors:

  • Purchase of play equipment
  • Creation of outdoor areas with protection from the elements
  • Fencing and hazard enclosures
  • Surface improvements

Grants like this are crucial for childcare providers, especially in areas identified as childcare deserts, ensuring they can continue to operate and provide quality care to families in need.

Western Oregon University Theatre Department to present a new perspective on a classic play.

MONMOUTH, Ore.Early this spring, Western Oregon University proudly presents its theatrical production of Stef Smith’s “Nora: A Doll’s House”. Directed by Kindra Steenerson,

Nora is the perfect wife and mother. She is dutiful and beautiful and everything is always in its right place. But when a secret from her past comes back to haunt her, her life rapidly unravels. Over the course of three days, Nora must fight to protect herself and her family or risk losing everything.

Ibsen’s brutal portrayal of womanhood caused outrage when it was first performed in 1879. This bold new adaptation reframes the drama in three different time periods. The fight for women’s suffrage, the swinging sixties and modern-day intertwine in this urgent, poetic play that asks how far have we really come in the past 100 years.

Burlingham Trust contributes $50K to support student resources at Western Oregon University

Written by Maureen Brakke

MONMOUTH, Ore.—The Burlingham Trust recently granted $50K toward supporting the new Student Success Center at Western Oregon University. With a significant proportion of Western’s students, faculty and staff, and alumni coming from Marion County, this building will not only expand resources in Monmouth but also strengthen the deep ties between Salem, Monmouth, and the surrounding counties. “Investing in the new Student Success Center is an investment in our future and historically underserved students,” said Ron Peters, chair of the Burlingham Trust. “We are pleased to contribute to this vital resource for the university as it will enhance student support systems and empower students to thrive both academically and professionally. Together, we are creating pathways to success.”

“We are incredibly grateful to the Burlingham Trust for their generous gift,” said Katie Wojke, vice president of Advancement and executive director of the WOU Foundation. “This contribution will significantly support our mission to provide the important resources and programs that will be available to all students through the new Student Success Center.

Maps Community Foundation donates $25K toward student success at Western Oregon University

Written by Maureen Brakke

MONMOUTH, Ore.—Maps Community Foundation, the community giving arm of Maps Credit Union, is proud to announce its generous donation of $25,000 toward supporting the new Student Success Center at Western Oregon University. This vital support will enhance the student experience and provide essential resources for students on their journey from enrollment to graduation.

With approximately 50 percent of Western’s students being first-generation college students, many encounter challenges that can hinder their academic success. The support from Maps Community Foundation will play a crucial role in addressing these needs, offering students the support and resources necessary to thrive throughout their college experience.

“At Maps, we believe in the power of education and the importance of giving back to our community,” said Kim Hanson, executive director of  Maps Community Foundation. “We are thrilled to contribute to the Student Success Center and help foster an environment where all students can achieve their goals.”

VP of Advancement and Executive Director of the WOU Foundation at Western Oregon University Katie Wojke, expressed gratitude for the partnership. “Having community partners like Maps Credit Union and Maps Community Foundation is invaluable. Their understanding of the importance of supporting students in college enhances our ability to provide essential resources. We are deeply thankful for their generous contribution, which will significantly impact the lives of our students.”

Completing a college degree enhances the quality of life for students and positively impacts their families and the wider community. The new Student Success Center is now open and will provide a welcoming space for students to access academic support and resources that empower them to succeed. About Maps Credit Union

On June 6, 1935, one year after the Federal Credit Union Act became law, an organizational meeting was held in what was then called Salem Senior High School. That day, 20 teachers agreed to volunteer their time and talents to start a credit union that would benefit all employees of Marion County Public Schools and Willamette University. Since 1935, we’ve grown from just 20 members to nearly 80,000 members and we’ve changed a lot along the way. For one thing, our community now encompasses the entire Willamette Valley—not just teachers and school employees. Our products and services have changed a lot over the years too, but the security of our members and the cooperative values we were founded on are at the forefront of each development. We keep this commitment because our members allow us to provide increasingly innovative and forward-thinking financial services while also empowering us to give back to the communities we serve. We will keep growing, but we’ll never forget our roots. After all, we owe our progress and sustained service to the educators who laid the foundation for us.

Joy Brown selected as new Director of Admissions at Western Oregon University

MONMOUTH, Ore. — Western Oregon University is pleased to announce the selection of Joy Brown as the new director of admissions, effective January 22. With nearly a decade of experience in higher education, Brown brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her new role.

Currently serving as the senior associate director of undergraduate admissions at George Fox University, Brown has successfully led various initiatives that enhanced student recruitment and engagement. Her previous leadership roles include positions at Lewis & Clark College and Pepperdine University, where she developed innovative strategies to attract and retain students.

“Joy’s extensive background in admissions and her commitment to student success make her an excellent choice for this vital position,” said Paige Jackson, Assistant Provost for Enrollment Management and Student Success at Western Oregon University. “We are confident that her leadership will significantly enhance our admissions processes and further our mission to promote access to higher education in our community and beyond.”

Brown holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Pepperdine University and is working towards completing a Ph.D. in higher education from Azusa Pacific University. Her academic credentials and her professional experience, position her to lead WOU’s admissions team effectively.

“I am honored and excited to join Western Oregon University as the director of admissions,” Brown stated. “I look forward to collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to foster an inclusive environment that encourages prospective students to choose WOU.”

Western Oregon University is dedicated to providing quality education and preparing students for success in a rapidly changing world. Brown’s leadership will be instrumental in furthering this mission.
